7 First Aid Mistakes That Can Put More Danger To Health!

We can not tell when an emergency occur or when someone becomes suddenly sick. Knowing  proper first aid procedures is essential because it can actually save lives. Singapore Red Cross Academy’s Principal Trainer, Mr Steven DeSouza said "Be prepared, learn first aid. It is like buying an insurance policy, just in case you need to use it. Your family will be the main beneficiaries.”

However, most of us may not fully understand on how to do it and we are handling emergency situation the wrong way. That's why proper method is advised.

Here are the list of do’s and don'ts in case of emergency:
1. Tilting your head back during  nosebleed - Doing such thing may lead to drain the blood back into your throat, which can make you gag or cough that can obstruct breathing. It is advised to apply direct pressure by pinching your nose but keep your head straight (in neutral position with your chin parallel to the ground). Sit and stay relax.

2. Putting heat on a sprain or fracture - according to the spokesperson for the Urgent Care Association of America William Gluckman said “Always apply cold initially”. Don't put heat because it increases blood flow, which can make swelling worse whereas ice helps decrease swelling. 

3. Not treating burn long enough - according to Jeffrey Pellegrino, PhD, of the American Red Cross. “The heat from a burn travels deep into your skin, where it can continue to destroy tissue even if you’ve cooled the surface,” he says. “You need the cold to soak in to prevent further damage”. So the best way to treat burned skin is to run it under cool water and you need to do it at least ten to 20 minutes.

4. Removing gauze from bleeding wound -  Don't remove old gauze from bleeding injury because it will start the wound bleeding again. “If the pad soak through-don’t pick it up and replace it—just add a fresh piece of gauze on top”. says Chris Cebollero, chief of EMS for Christian Hospital in St. Louis. It is advised to apply pressure to the wound until the bleeding ceases, then rinse it to prevent infection. Apply antibiotic ointment and wrap with bandage. 

5. Trying to remove debris from your eyes - Getting rid of foreign objects from your eyes can lead to serious damage and the irritant get worsen as well. It would be better to secure a paper cup over it with tape so nothing else can get in—and seek immediate care. If your eye comes into contact with chemical, flush it out with water for about 15 minutes.

6. Not seeking care after car accident - Even if you’re fine after the car accident, getting checked out at a hospital is advised because your adrenaline-fueled fight-or-flight response can mask pain at first and it can be ten minutes or two hours after the accident before you feel something according to Cebollero.

7. Making it hard for the paramedics to find you - Let say for example, you were choking in a restaurant. Don't run to the bathroom but rather stay where people can help you and have someone called 911.  Pellegrino says  “People die in bathrooms from choking because they don’t want to disturb other diners. They collapse, and nobody knows why,”
